Prayer for January 21, 2020: Please pray with me. God of abundance, you made all things and those things are still creating. You are a God of overwhelming creativity and abundance. Yet, somehow we think there are limits to your abundance. We get all funky with our beliefs when it comes to money and wealth. All of a sudden the money that we have is “ours.” Hands off God, we earned it. It’s ours. Don’t tell us what to do with it. Hmmm. How did that happen? Why do those of us who have plenty still live in fear of not having enough? How else to explain hoarding? This sounds harsh though Lord. Yes, that’s how we can get out of what you call us to do with our possessions. Wait, our possessions?!? You lay claim to it all? The house? The car? Our money? Our stuff? This is getting harder God! I don’t like it! What’s that? It’s all yours anyway and we can’t take it with us? And we won’t need it anyway? Oh yeah, we forget that. And we have trouble actually believing in the resurrection and eternity. That’s clear when we care more about our stuff than answering your call to care for our neighbors. You call us to love you and our neighbors. Empower us and poke us to do just that. You equip us with everything that we need to participate in the unfolding of the Kingdom of God. If only we loosen our grip on the stuff you give us to use. Open our eyes to see that in using what you give us, we not only offer grace and mercy and hope and love to the receiver, we also receive them as well. Amen.
