Prayer for May 14: Please pray with me. God of the oppressed, the question that rises up is “how long?” How long, oh Lord? How long will those without a voice be silenced. How long will those who are without power be squashed? How long will those who are not considered normal be subject to rejection just for being who they are? How long will divisions be allowed to determine people’s worth and value? How long will the -isms continue to choke humanity to death? How long? How long will the poor be stuck in a black hole with no way out? How long? The day is coming when the world will be flipped right side up again. When there will be restoration, renewal, and transformation. We look forward to that day. And we seek to bring that day forward. Guide us on our paths as you invite us to participate in the unfolding of your kingdom. Amen.
Prayer for May 11: Please pray with me. Holy God, you comfort the sorrowful and those that mourn. So often we are told that weeping is a sign of weakness and that we are supposed to be strong. But you know better. Weeping is a sign of being vulnerable, of caring deeply. I can only imagine how many times you have wept Lord. I imagine you weep every time your Good News is rejected in favor of us wanting to do things our way. I imagine you weep every time you are rejected in favor of us wanting to use you as a tool to support our own agendas. I imagine you weep every time you hear us pray for things that are in opposition to who you are – prayers of revenge, prayers of war, prayers of nationalism, prayers of separation, prayers of greed, prayers of selfishness. You weep. And we weep with you. How long oh Lord? How long? When will we truly know, truly be embraced, truly be changed enough – changed to turn from our selfish ways and turned back towards you. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Comfort them Lord. Amen.
Prayer for May 4: Please pray with me. Eternal Hope, today we lift up your church. With you hope springs eternal. Yet, sometimes that can be difficult for some of your followers to grasp and hold onto. That’s not surprising when we see all the crap going on around us – the lack of value of others, of your creation. There are plenty of messages of hopelessness that consume so many. Yet, your message is a message of hope – a future that is better than the present. Your message is a message of light. Let your light shine bright. Let us be the bearers of your light. Amen.
Prayer for May 3: Please pray with me. God of change, today we lift up your church. You are a God of hope, yet so many want to live in a world of hopelessness. Where is the Gospel in that? Instead, you call on us to experience death and resurrection – that things will change. This includes the church too. You call on us to experience transformation. This includes the church also. Open us to experience these things – for the sake of the spread of the Gospel. Amen.
Prayer for May 2: Please pray with me. God of Good News, you call on us to sow your message carelessly. You call on us to give it away without care of where it goes. Our concern is not in saving people – only you can do that. Instead, you call us to share your message with as many as possible. We rejoice when some embrace the message. We cry when some reject it and fall away. But it is not for us to determine how your message will work in each person. What is that to us? We are called to follow. To follow and proclaim. To follow and to live our faith. To not worry about what others may do or how they respond. But rather to focus on what is important – you. Help us to keep our sights on you in how we live and encounter people. Amen.
Prayer for May 1: Please pray with me. God of light, today we ask that your light shine bright in our world. Evil exists among us – it has reared its head in our midst throughout history. It leaves its mark, death. It seeks to drain hope, to cause strife, to bring judgement, to spread wrath, and cause fear. It shows up in many places. And it can be overbearing to many. There are many who are living in this darkness Lord. Yet, the darkness cannot overcome the light – your light. When your light shines on darkness, the darkness is vanquished. It’s not a fight between dark and light – the darkness just can’t exist where there is light. Shine your light in the world. We know that you see to instill hope, to bring forgiveness, to offer mercy, to show love, and to calm the anxiety that exists. You show up in many ways and places and times. You come to us. You shine your light into our lives. And you invite us, and call us, and send us our to be your light in the world. Give us the courage to be light in the darkness around us. Amen.
Prayer for April 23: Please pray with me. Holy One, you come to us in many ways – often in ways we don’t recognize. Open our eyes, our hearts, and our ears to you as you show up in our lives. Open us to hear your truth – that you call us to live out the truth, not use the truth as a weapon to beat others into submission. You call us to live out the truth with love. You call us to action. Few have ever been convinced by mere argument. But many more have changed because they were first seen as fellow human travelers on this journey of life. Help us to get to know people – their names and their stories. Help up to open our hearts to these people. Amen.
