Prayer for April 21. Please pray with me. On this Easter Friday we pray for all students as they approach the end of their semesters. It’s crunch time Lord. Help them to complete all their papers, assignments, projects, and exams. Help them keep their eye on the finish line knowing that their studies don’t really end, but rather, they change. When formal education ends, the education of life continues. Walk with all students in their stress, late nights, piles of assignments and papers. Be with all family members and friends of students as they continue to encourage the students in their lives. Amen.
Prayer for November 30: Please pray with me. God of patience, today we pray an unpopular prayer. Give us patience Lord, especially in knowing that you act in your own timing to fulfill your will. We may not like it. In fact, we may howl in protest at you God. That’s only because we seem to have this belief that history began when we were born and will end when we die. Yet we know that we only occupy the tiniest of spaces on the timeline of history. Help us to understand what our role is in your will and send your Spirit to strengthen us to live into that call. Amen.
Prayer for November 24: Please pray with me. God of thanksgiving, today we pray a simple pray mouthed in two words – Thank you. Thank you for all that you have given us. Thank you for our lives. Thank you for the relationships – even when we struggle with them. Thank you for our families. Thank you for forgiveness. Thank you for peace. Thank you for mercy. Thank you for grace. Thank you for love. Thank you for putting up with me and my hardheartedness and stubbornness. Thank you for showing me the way. Thank you.
Prayer for October 24: Please pray with me. God who is exalted, you tell us that those who exalt themselves will be humbled and those who humble themselves will be exalted. In our society, we define success by flipping that statement on its head. Yet when we do, we find the foolishness, emptiness, and fleetingness of exalting ourselves. Ultimately, this is a failed attempt to fill a void within ourselves. We know you wait patiently for us to give this up. As Augustine once wrote – we can only rest when we rest in you. Amen.
Prayer for October 12: Please pray with me. God of creation, today we ask that you bless all animals especially our pets. We thank you for these companions who in many ways are family members. We thank you for the many ways that these creatures showcase aspects of you God. We thank you for the unconditional love of dogs, the affection of cats, the songs of birds, and the uniqueness of so many other creatures. Help us to be good stewards of these creatures and help us to learn from them as well. Amen.
Prayer for October 4: Please pray with me. Holy God, we ask what can we say. We plead with you – what can we do? What can we possibly do to earn your love? Your answer – Absolutely nothing. And that’s ok. In fact, that’s just perfect. Stop trying. Just say thank you. Thank you God. Thank you. Amen.
Prayer for September 2: Please pray with me. God of all knowing, where do we start? In our age of certainty, help us to remember that we know so very little. Remind us, shock us into it if needed, that faith in you is not contained in what we know about you. Faith is your gift to us. If we admit it, we would know that we can’t explain it. Help us to respond with trust – no matter how difficult that may be. Amen.
Prayer for August 29: Please pray with me. God of truth, today we pray for all students. Put them in environments where they can learn, where they can grow, where they can answer your call to be who they are meant to be. Bless all students, teachers, administrators, cooks, janitors, drivers, parents, guards, and those who support the school system in any way. We thank you for the opportunity and the capacity to learn. Amen.
Prayer for April 19: Please pray with me. Accompanying God, today we ask that you walk with us when we are uncertain. As much as we would love to have a clear vision or voice from you of what we are supposed to do, we know that your ways are mysterious and beyond our ways. Help us to dwell in the discomfort of uncertainty of life, of unanswered questions, raised concerns, and questioned assumptions. Not for the sake of being uncomfortable, but rather so that we can wrestle with these things and gain a better understanding and insight into truth. Help us to change our attitudes and beliefs to align with reality and your will for us. And forgive us when we try to change reality and your will to our own wants and selfish desires. Amen.
Prayer for April 13: Please pray with me. Teaching God, today we pray for teachers – the people who we entrust so much responsibility with each day. We entrust them with what we value the most – our children. Today we ask that you give teachers everything they need to not only do their job, but also to be an example for students. Give them wisdom to impart, patience, discernment, caring hearts, slow to anger and quick in praise. Ease their burdens and less the paperwork and requirements forced on them so they can carry out what they are called to do – create an environment where students can learn about life and be prepared to live that life with a thirst to continue learning after formal schooling is over. Amen.
