Prayer for March 28

Prayer for March 28: Please pray with me.  Holy one who makes time itself holy, be with us this week.  We pray for Christians around the world as they inch closer to their holiest time of the year.  We pray that you would make Christians uncomfortable and inconvenienced by injustices that exist in our midst – enough to respond out of our call from God.  We pray for Jews around the world as they move ever closer to the Passover celebration – the reminder of how God acts in mysterious and decisive ways.  Remind us that you are still acting in our lives and our world.  Amen.

Prayer for March 14

Prayer for March 14: Please pray with me. God of the process, we recognize that you are God who values the way, not just the end.  The early Christians were known as followers of the Way.  Jews have always been followers of the Law handed down by you Lord.  The way matters.  The means matter.  Yet, so many of your followers turn a blind eye on this and demand cheap grace.  Just because you give grace freely doesn’t mean we can abuse that gift, we can throw it around, that we can waste it.  Rather, there is a responsibility to live out the grace that is given to us.  Just because you give out forgiveness freely, doesn’t mean we get a get-out-of-jail free card and can abuse that.  We aren’t called to enable abuse of forgiveness, but rather to live it.  Just because you are love and love us freely, doesn’t me we are free to abuse that love.  You give us grace, forgiveness, and love so that we might be empowered and strengthen to go and give grace, forgiveness, and love to others and in so doing, to participate in the unfolding of your kingdom so that people may encounter you and have their lives changed.  That’s what it’s all about ultimately – people’s lives changing because they encounter you.  Amen.

Prayer for February 21

Prayer for February 21: please pray with me. God of time, we seek you out. There are many who read your Word and are besieged by fear. They see you as wrathful and desiring destruction. We are oriented towards death and destruction because of sin. But this is not the whole story – not even close. You promise to renew and restore at the culmination of time, not to destroy. You promise to transform and offer us hope because you are a God of life. Help us to accept this promise. And to live into it as well. Amen.

Prayer for February 20

Prayer for February 20: Please pray with me.  God of creation, you walk with us in the wilderness.  You wander with us when we are lost.  You traveled with the people of Israel as they journeyed in the wilderness for 40 years.  You cast Jesus out into the wilderness where he spent 40 days facing temptation.  Be with us in our time of wilderness.  We feel lost, yet, this is temporary.  Just as the Israelites came out of the wilderness into the promised land and just as Jesus came out of the wilderness to start his ministry, we know we will also come out of the wilderness where you want us to be.  Give us patience to keep going through the wilderness until our journey is done.  Amen.

Prayer for February 6

Prayer for February 6: Please pray with me.  God who is very real, come to us.  We live in an age in which some have difficulty discerning what is real and what is fake.  We live in an age in which there is a severe lack of trust in others.  We live in an age in which the highest value many hold is how much attention they can get from others.  Turn us from complaining about this only Lord.  That helps no one.  Instead, work through us – through our actions and our words.  Work through us to be your voice and presence in this world.  When we confront other who ask “What is truth?”, work through us to show your truth to others.  Help us to live true to your word and your teachings.  Strengthen us that our actions and words might be in alignment with your will and word.  Move us away from the sin of certainty, purity of belief tests, and making orthodoxy into an idol.  Instead let your word guide us each day.  We aren’t called to go around and beat others over the head and into submission in order for them to follow our version of “right.”  Rather, we called to listen to your will, and live it out – with love, compassion, forgiveness, and peace.  We are called to live our grace and offer grace to others.  It in living this way that we follow your will.  No one ever came to belief because we beat them over the head with our version of being right.  No one ever came to belief because we shamed them or brought fear into their lives.  Why would they?  Faith is a gift that you give, oh Holy One.  We are called to respond in trust to that gift.  Give us the courage to respond.  Give the wisdom to know that it is not us that gives faith or salvation to others – it is only you.  Amen.

Prayer for November 10

Prayer for November 10: Please pray with me.  God who calls us, today we pray that we might open our hearts to answer your call for our lives.  Answering your call is not always easy Lord, but it is worth it.  No, your goal isn’t to bless us with worldly things as if that which will pass away is worth much in the grand scheme of things.  Rather, your goal is the restoration of creation and relationships.  You have accomplished it all and the amazing thing is that you invite us to participate in the unfolding of your kingdom.  Help us to say Yes! to your call.  Amen.

Prayer for November 8

Prayer for November 8: Please pray with me.  Omnipresent God, we come to you with so many questions and doubts.  And yet, you open your arms to us and listen.  How crazy is that?  You, the one who created the universe and everything in it, are willing to listen to a tiny speck of life who is here for just a fleeting moment in time.  Yet you do.  You listen to each one of us – with our questions, our doubts, our anger, our sorrow, and so much more.  We thank you for listening Holy One.  And for speaking words of life to us.  Help us to listen and respond to your Word.  Move us to respond in action to what you call us to. Amen.
