Prayer for October 31: Please pray with me. Reforming God, today we ask that you continue to reform your church. You aren’t done with us yet Lord, we know this. You aren’t even close. Your kingdom is still unfolding. Help us to see how you invite us to participate in that unfolding in your world. Reform our hearts as well God. They need radical reformation – away from sin and death to new life in you. Reform our minds away from the idolatry of being right to being open to explore ideas with openness as we move closer to your truth. Reform our relationships to see the humanity of those around us and especially of those we disagree with or consider our enemies. Reform our words so that they convey Good News of grace, mercy, peace, and justice – away from words of violence, division, hatred, and death. Reform our lives. They are in your hands Lord. Use us to carry out the continuing work of Reformation that is needed today. Amen.
Prayer for September 12: Please pray with me. God of the poor, today we pray for the poor and those in poverty – end their suffering. We also pray for those who work to end poverty – strengthen them. Help us to see a new way to dealing with poverty – by actually empowering people, tapping into their value as people, treating people as people, and expecting that life will improve. Help us to see that when you encounter people, their lives are changed. Help us to be a conduit for that to happen. Amen.
Prayer for January 10: Please pray with me. Patient God, today we pray for our enemies, our opponents, those who annoy the crap out of us, those that we don’t like or trust. We really don’t want to pray for them Lord. We’d rather call them names, fight them, dehumanize them, shame them and so much more. Yet, you call on us to pray for our enemies. This is not easy – in fact, it sucks. But then again, following you was never meant to be easy. We pray that all those opposed to us would have a change of heart. And more importantly Lord, we pray for ourselves – change our hearts towards our enemies and opponents. Silence us before we respond in anger. Hold us back before we respond with violence. Stop us before we type our of frustration. Close our mouths before we say something we will regret. There are frustrating people in the world Lord. Help us to see when we are frustrating someone else so that we might instead offer mercy, forgiveness, patience, and if need be, make us walk away to give space to others. Amen.
Prayer for September 21: Please pray with me. God of all creation, today we come to you in thanksgiving. We thank you for this summer as it ends. We thank you for the blessings we received during this season and look forward to a new season set to dawn on us. Just as the seasons change and we ask that you work on our hearts and minds to change us to be instruments of your grace, mercy, and love. As the leaves begin to change and fall from the trees, we ask that anger, fear, and pride would be changed in us and fall from our very being. Change our reality just as the world around us changes. So that in changing our reality, we may respond in what we do and how we interact with those around us and with the world we live in. Amen.
Prayer for July 19: Please pray with me. God of truth, today we pray that we would be changed. Help us to stop waiting for others to change, praying for others to change, trying to force others to change. Help us to let go of the desire to be right. Help us to stop asking “Who is my neighbor?” Transform us instead to take Jesus words and call to be a neighbor, especially to those we hate or are hated by, and make them a part of our very being. Amen.
