Prayer for October 5

Prayer for October 5: Please pray with me. God who is like a heart surgeon, today we ask for some major heart surgery.  Yes Lord, we need you to look at our hearts – they are faulty.  They lead us to believe that we are in control.  They lead us to believe that it’s ok to exclude and divide.  They lead us to believe that we are the exclusive holders of what is right.  Cut away all the things that harm our hearts, that make our hearts hard.  Use the surgeon’s knife to remove the pieces of our hearts that aren’t working the way you intend, and replace those parts with your will, mercy, love, and forgiveness.  Give us hearts that are on fire for you and lead us to care out your will for us.  Amen.

Prayer for April 24

Prayer for April 24: Please pray with me. God who gives direction, today we pray for all you are in a discernment process – trying to figure out what to do, what not to do, and what you are calling us to.  Being unsure and not the one in control can be scary God, yet you remind us again and again that we are not the ones in control.  And you remind us that regardless of scary it gets, you will continue to accompany us on our life journey.  Amen.

Prayer for December 5

Prayer for December 5: Please pray with me. God of the lost, today we pray for all who are lost.  It can be scary to be lost – to not know where you are, what you believe anymore, who you are, who you are called to be.  Comfort the lost, guide their steps, and let us walk along side them as you bring them along on the path of their lives to you.  Sometimes Lord, we need to be lost too – to recognize that we are not in control of our lives.  Help us in our times of being lost to reach out to you, not so we can claim control over our lives or over you, but rather, to receive what we need most – you.  You walk with us and so many times we are blind to seeing you.  Open our eyes to seeing you in our lives and close our eyes to our determination to run our lives as we wish.  Amen.

Prayer for November 23

Prayer for November 23: Please pray with me. Reconciling God, today we pray a difficult prayer.  We pray for our enemies.  We don’t pray for their defeat and destruction.  Rather we pray that there would be a change of heart – for both them and us.  Help them and us to see the humanity of each other.  Help them and us to see that violence and anger and division lead to death.  You have a different way Lord, a difficult way.  Make both them and us unsatisfied in our judgements of each other.  Turn us from seeking out what is the worst for one another.  Help us to see that our most serious enemy is not anyone out there, no them at all, but rather, the enemy within that wants to claim control over our lives.  Help us to see that our real enemy is the sin, the broken relationship with God and with others, the smug attitudes we cling to, the desire to be right no matter the cost, the excessive pride, the destructive envy, the lust for power and attention.  Teach us to follow your example – to love our enemies in a most vulnerable way.  Amen.

Prayer for Aug. 23

Prayer for Aug. 23: Please pray with me. Holy God, where do we start today? So many people are telling us what to do and how to think about so many things in the world and about our own lives.  So many people who want to control us, yet have so little control over their own lives.  How do we respond Lord?  Give us patience today – we need it.  Give us grace that we may offer grace to those around us and especially to those who are telling us what to do.  Give us peace to know that only you are really in charge of our lives.  Give us listening ears that we may hear what is truly being said, not just the words that we hear.  Lastly, help us to not go around telling others what to do or how to think – remind us, ever so gently, that you are the Savior, not us.  Amen.

Prayer for July 29

Prayer for July 29: Please pray with me. Holy God, today we pray that our eyes would be opened to seeing the idols we have created and rely upon us.  Forgive us for turning to these human made objects instead of to you.  Why do we put more faith in politicians, speeches, celebrities, money, sports, entertainment, sex, drugs, technology, patriotism, security, intelligence, and emotion than in you?  Why do we so fervently desire to be in control of these gods and want to be served by them?  None of these things can save us oh God.  Only you can. Open our hearts to take the leap of faith.  Strengthen us to take a blind step forward towards you, not knowing where that step will land, but knowing that regardless of the result, you will never abandon us.  Amen.
