Prayer for August 4: Please pray with me. God of Truth, clear the blinders from our eyes. Make us the blind man whom Jesus restored sight to. Help us to see that we are not the ultimate arbiters of truth – only you are. Move us away, far away, from our preferred binary beliefs that pit people against one another, that create the “good” and the “bad” people. Push us far away from cornering people into either/or decisions. Deep down we know that life is messy and full of gray. That doesn’t mean that anything goes. It means we are dealing with the reality of humanity. And help us in our unbelief of thinking that our faith is based on what we believe. If that is so, then our faith is pretty shaky and nothing more than a house of cards that is ready to cave in at any moment. Open our hearts to live into trust in you, not knowing what the future holds, but knowing that you walk along side us as we journey forth. Amen.
Prayer for September 8: Please pray with me. God who fixes things, oh how badly we just want you to fix everything and make it all right God. Oh how we think we know better than you when it comes to seeing how messed up things are. Oh how limited our vision is. Today we ask for eyes that might see you in the hiddenness of creation, in the messes, in the chaos, in the pain and suffering. Make us instruments of your mission to restore all of creation and humanity into a right relationship with you God. Amen.
Prayer for August 30: Please pray with me. God of light, today we pray for those who feel lost in the darkness. It seems as though there is darkness all around us and we fear it. Some darkness is the type we see while other darkness is the type we feel. Yet, we know that darkness is nothing but the absence of light. When you shine in our our lives, you vanquish the darkness and we can’t help but see. Prepare our eyes for the times that you come into our lives. Prepare our hearts that we may be open to seeing. Prepare our arms that we would let go of the darkness and embrace your light. Amen.
Prayer for May 5: Please pray with me. Patient God, today we ask for forgiveness. Humanity does so many things in your name that we can only imagine would make you do a face palm. Forgive us for our actions and words that cause division and strife, that separate us from one another and from you. Give us eyes to see that humanity is more similar than different and that our divisions come from man-made lines and ideas. Give us ears to hear the humanity around us and in distant lands. Give us forgiving hearts that we may be the first to forgive instead of respond in kind when violence is done to us. Give us patience to endure so that we do not let our hearts be troubled, but rather keep our hope in you. Amen.
