Prayer for October 18

Prayer for October 18: Please pray with me. God of our future, today we lift up our futures.  So often we see images of a not-so-bright future based on our present.  It’s easy to get sucked into a cloud of darkness.  There is a great deal of negativity and gloom around us.  Yet, you offer an alternative – a message filled with hope, mercy, forgiveness, peace.  You offer us something unthinkable – to walk with us in the dark places of our lives and to be a light that shines in the darkness.  We walk on a path that leads to places that we have no idea about.  And you walk right along side of us.  Help us to be vulnerable, to build trust and to be trusting.  Open our hearts to respond to your call for us.  Amen.

Prayer for October 6

Prayer for October 6: Please pray with me.  Holy God, you are the one true God.  Yet, so often we turn to idols – those things which we put our trust in.  But really, how ridiculous is that?  All of these things are human made and eventually will fade away.  All these things which we put our hope for the future will disappear and be forgotten.  Yet for some reason we think it makes sense to put our hope and faith in them.  That’s crazy Lord!  But it makes sense if we believe that history started when we were born and will end when we die.  Yet, deep down we know this is not true.  You cut across time and space well before we arrived and will be here well after we die.  And you offer us a promise of hope, a promise of resurrection in a renewed and restored world.  We’d be crazy not to trust this promise, Holy God.  You always keep your promises.  Open our hearts to embrace your promise of hope.  Amen.

Prayer for September 23

Prayer for September 23: Please pray with me.  God who is and was and will be, today we pray that you remind us that you work in unexpected ways.  We have seen you work in the past – we give you thanksgiving for that.  Loosen us from the binding of the past though.  You remind us in Isaiah that you are about to do a new thing – to work in unexpected ways.  Open our hearts to experience you anew in our lives and in our systems.  You accompany us in the present and have promised to continue to walk with us in the future.  May we trust that you will do as you say, just as you have always done.  Amen.
