Prayer for August 11: Please pray with me. God who shows up in the midst of tumult and chaos, boy do we need you. Our world is crazy, yet the crazy thing is we think this is new. Chaos has been the norm for so long, yet we forget that it is normal. We often feel like we are like the disciples being tossed about in the boat and fear everything around us. And in that fear we erect walls and ways to keep the chaos and others away. But they never work. Isolation is never the answer. If it was, Peter would have drowned. But then you show up Lord and bam, something even crazier happens – grace. you give us exactly what we don’t deserve – a hand reaching out to us and saving us. Thank you. Amen.
Prayer for July 24: Please pray with me. God of the unexpected, today we ask that you surprise us. Open our eyes to see and our ears to hear your Word anew. Help us to hear your word of grace and love for those around us – friend and foe. Help us to see the humanity of those around us. Remind us that our job is not to judge and force others to be like us and adopt our version of “right.” Instead our job is to respond to the grace and love you give us by being wheat in the midst of weeds – to live differently, to proactively live out the kingdom, to forgive, to love, to care, to be peacemakers. Amen
Prayer for February 21: Please pray with me. God of grace, we learn that grace is not getting what we deserve, but rather, getting what we don’t deserve – your love, mercy, and forgiveness. Because you give us these things, turn us to go and love, to show mercy, and to offer forgiveness to all, even our enemies. Amen.
Prayer for November 24: Please pray with me. God of thanksgiving, today we pray a simple pray mouthed in two words – Thank you. Thank you for all that you have given us. Thank you for our lives. Thank you for the relationships – even when we struggle with them. Thank you for our families. Thank you for forgiveness. Thank you for peace. Thank you for mercy. Thank you for grace. Thank you for love. Thank you for putting up with me and my hardheartedness and stubbornness. Thank you for showing me the way. Thank you.
Prayer for November 8: Please pray with me. Sovereign God, we are a nation that is gripped by fear and anxiety – it is strangling us. We look to our leaders and to candidates to ease the stranglehold and only find them gripping tighter with their words and rhetoric. That is because we have decided to make them idols and gods – we wait anxiously to hear what they have to say. Will they bring us peace? Will they make us great? Will they solve our problems for us? When did we cede our responsibility to live out what you call us to be, Lord? Turn us from putting our salvation in human leaders and instead see them for who they are – fellow human beings who should be the chief servants, examples for us to follow in service to the rest of creation and humanity. Turn us from dividing people into us and them camps. Turn us to answer your call for our lives. Turn us to see that peace is not a destination, but rather the way of living. Turn us so that our trust is in you and that we respond to your call in faithfulness. The days ahead will not be easy Lord. Only you can give us the strength to go forward – to be Christians who are known for your love, grace, peace, and mercy. Shape us into your instruments for the days ahead. Let no one mistake us – may our lives be beacons that display who you are and how you are active in our world today. Turn us, shape us, move us. Amen.
Prayer for October 27: Please pray with me. God who doesn’t settle, today we pray a bold prayer. You come before us, always reforming and making things new. You make us uncomfortable in what you call us to be and do. Help us to have eyes that are able to see the contrast that exists – are we in coffins or in flowerbeds? You call us out of the coffins in our life – the things that keep us static, desiring unnecessary safety, and pointed towards death. Instead you call us to be in flowerbeds – life that is beautiful, growing, changing, fertilized in the messy dirt of life, and interacting with those you love but society calls dangerous, ugly, and unwanted. Toil in the flowerbeds of our life Lord so that we may be your fruit that feeds those around us with food, life, and your grace. Amen.
Prayer for September 29: Please pray with me. God of grace and mercy, today we ask that you open our eyes to see and hear the grace and mercy that you give us each and every day. Sometimes it seems as though you are so distant and far away, that you forgotten us or left us to our own devices. Yet is in these very times that you walk with us. We desire to feel your presence – a frail human need. Yet, we also know that you keep your promises. Give us the ability to respond to your grace and mercy with trust – trust that you remain with us, until the end of the age. Amen.
