Prayer for May 4: Please pray with me. Eternal Hope, today we lift up your church. With you hope springs eternal. Yet, sometimes that can be difficult for some of your followers to grasp and hold onto. That’s not surprising when we see all the crap going on around us – the lack of value of others, of your creation. There are plenty of messages of hopelessness that consume so many. Yet, your message is a message of hope – a future that is better than the present. Your message is a message of light. Let your light shine bright. Let us be the bearers of your light. Amen.
Prayer for May 3: Please pray with me. God of change, today we lift up your church. You are a God of hope, yet so many want to live in a world of hopelessness. Where is the Gospel in that? Instead, you call on us to experience death and resurrection – that things will change. This includes the church too. You call on us to experience transformation. This includes the church also. Open us to experience these things – for the sake of the spread of the Gospel. Amen.
Prayer for February 21: please pray with me. God of time, we seek you out. There are many who read your Word and are besieged by fear. They see you as wrathful and desiring destruction. We are oriented towards death and destruction because of sin. But this is not the whole story – not even close. You promise to renew and restore at the culmination of time, not to destroy. You promise to transform and offer us hope because you are a God of life. Help us to accept this promise. And to live into it as well. Amen.
Prayer for October 18: Please pray with me. God of our future, today we lift up our futures. So often we see images of a not-so-bright future based on our present. It’s easy to get sucked into a cloud of darkness. There is a great deal of negativity and gloom around us. Yet, you offer an alternative – a message filled with hope, mercy, forgiveness, peace. You offer us something unthinkable – to walk with us in the dark places of our lives and to be a light that shines in the darkness. We walk on a path that leads to places that we have no idea about. And you walk right along side of us. Help us to be vulnerable, to build trust and to be trusting. Open our hearts to respond to your call for us. Amen.
Prayer for April 26: Please pray with me. God of the guilty, today we pray for inmates and prisoners. We ask that you touch their lives. Radically reorient their lives. Help them to see what purpose you have for their lives, in the midst of hopelessness and despair. Bless all who visit prisoners and share Christ’s presence with them. Set the captives free – free from sin, free from suffering, free from anguish – free to be able to serve you among their fellow prisoners. Amen.
Prayer for January 24: Please pray with me. God of persistence, today we pray for all who feel that all is lost and hopeless. It’s easy to fall into this way of feeling Lord – the world around us is lost and hopeless. The world offers us empty promises and temporary satisfaction. Only you can fill the hole within us to make us whole. Only you are our hope and salvation. Only in you are we found. Amen.
Prayer for November 29: Please pray with me. God of hope, today we pray that we would recognize the hope that you give the world – not in the form of freedom to buy stuff, nor in the accumulation of items. Open our eyes to see that the hope that you give is not in material things, but rather in a promise you give. A promise that tells us that no matter how hopeless the world might seem, you are there, accompanying us as we go through life. A promise that you will return and bring the fulfillment of your Kingdom. Amen.
Prayer for November 15: Please pray with me. Sovereign God, today we pray that we would recognize that our hope and salvation resides in you, as it always has, and always will. Forgive us when we willingly make people, nations, parties, policies, being right, and an assortment of other things into idols and place them above you. Turn us away from these idols so that we can live what you call us to be and to do – to worship you and to love our neighbors. Amen.
Prayer for September 13: Please pray with me. Word of God, you come to us in unique ways – especially through language. Open our eyes to the language we use when we communicate with you and with others. As you work to soften our hearts, soften our language as well. Move us away from language that separates and divides. Shift our communication away from absolutes that creates an us and a them. Open our ears to hear how we communicate the falsehood that our way is right and that everyone else had better get on board or else they are a part of the problem. Instead, shape us to communicate something completely different – make us instruments of your peace, love, and hope. Amen.
Prayer for July 20: Please pray with me. God of all, today we pray for something that might seem impossible – at least by human standards. We so desperately seek salvation – for ourselves, our family and friends, our communities, and our nation. We look in places that promise to save us from all sorts of evil and from enemies and opponents. We listen attentively to preachers of other gospels that promise that salvation will come when they have dispatched the “enemy.” We attach ourselves to a side in a fight in the hope that the rhetoric will be true. Yet, deep down, we know it is a lie and that the rhetoric is empty and that we will be disappointed yet again. Turn us Lord to you – the only real source of and the embodiment of salvation. The only one who’s words bring peace, forgiveness, love, and mercy. Transform us to be instruments of your peace, forgiveness, love, and mercy. Even, and especially, to those who are our enemies and to those who so desperately need to hear your message of hope. Amen.
