Prayer for July 26

Prayer for July 26: Please pray with me. God of humility, you know what humility is, far more than we can ever imagine.  For Christians, we believe that you humbled yourself in taking on human form.  Not only that, but you humbled yourself to the point of death – a humiliating death of crucifixion.  And you did that for us.  Help those who struggle with humility and too often give in to their own ego and sense of importance.  Help us to know that we are but small specks that are here one day and gone the next and that we will be forgotten in the ashes of history.  But you will not forget us.  Help us to be humble today and each day.  Amen.

Prayer for December 20

Prayer for December 20: Please pray with me.  God of all, today we pray that you shake us up.  Rip us from our sinful desire to divide people into camps that are on “our” side and “their” side.  This is ridiculous Lord!  How dare we separate your creation and children.  How dare we claim that you support our cause.  How pompous of us to even think that we could use you for our own purposes.  If we need humbled, then humble us.  And as you humble us, help us to know that you are right there with us and that there are no sides – except the sides we create.  Amen.

Prayer for October 24

Prayer for October 24: Please pray with me. God who is exalted, you tell us that those who exalt themselves will be humbled and those who humble themselves will be exalted.  In our society, we define success by flipping that statement on its head.  Yet when we do, we find the foolishness, emptiness, and fleetingness of exalting ourselves.  Ultimately, this is a failed attempt to fill a void within ourselves.  We know you wait patiently for us to give this up.  As Augustine once wrote – we can only rest when we rest in you.  Amen.

Prayer for October 13

Prayer for October 13: Please pray with me. God of wisdom, today we pray that you would rain down wisdom on people of all places. We pray that you would especially give wisdom to those who lead other people.  We also ask that the Spirit would move through those who select leaders as well.  Keep people from being swayed by raw emotion, heated rhetoric, pandering, fear, and other tools of manipulation.  Help us to see clearly who we are and who we are selecting for leadership positions.  And in seeing this, let us be humble enough to seek limits on the powers of those in charge so they may not be tempted abuse what is entrusted to them.  Amen.

Prayer for August 31

Prayer for August 31: Please pray with me. God of humility, we pray a dangerous prayer – help us to be humble.  Lord, be gentle with us in this prayer. We have an ideal of what it means to be humble – a way that makes us look and feel good about ourselves. But Lord, we know that there is so much more to humility than this. Do what you must to teach us this way of life so that we may offer it to others as we serve those around us. Amen.

Prayer for July 27

Prayer for July 27: Please pray with me. God of truth, today we pray to lessen our desire to be right. Help us to see that humility is a better way to live and that being open to the idea that we might be wrong takes all of us much farther in life. At the same time, we’re being very careful in what we ask for Lord. Please don’t humble us – we don’t think we are prepared for what that might look like. Maybe a better way would be to tire us out when we are so stuck on being right. It’s exhausting being right and always trying to correct and save everyone Lord. Please make that exhaustion so big and tiring that we just give up on the whole notion of trying to be right all the time. Help us to have a listening ear and open arms – even with our enemies. We can’t change them, but we can forgive them, show them grace and mercy, and offer them love.  What they do in response is out of our control.  Give us the strength to be an example, to be your representative here, in this place – to be your hands, feet, and mouth.  Amen.
