Prayer for January 24: Please pray with me. God of holy conversations, come into our conversations and bless them. We ask that you work through us to change the content of our conversations from ones of suspicion and division to conversations that live out our faith with grace, humility, and forgiveness. We can’t wait for someone else to start doing this – we will wait forever. Instead, cause us to be the ones to start. Use us as an example of what is possible. We need a different tone and attitude for difficult and important conversations Lord – conversations about politics and policy, conversations about race, conversations about people from different lands, conversations about work, conversations about humanity. Let grace flow through these conversations. Help us to not react to others, especially when they attack, insult, dehumanize, or degrade. Give us the strength to respond with grace, forgiveness, and a re-establishment of humanity. Let grace flow through our politics. Let grace flow through our conversations. Let grace flow through our lives. Let grace flow Lord. And let it start with me. Amen.
Prayer for July 26: Please pray with me. God of humility, you know what humility is, far more than we can ever imagine. For Christians, we believe that you humbled yourself in taking on human form. Not only that, but you humbled yourself to the point of death – a humiliating death of crucifixion. And you did that for us. Help those who struggle with humility and too often give in to their own ego and sense of importance. Help us to know that we are but small specks that are here one day and gone the next and that we will be forgotten in the ashes of history. But you will not forget us. Help us to be humble today and each day. Amen.
Prayer for August 31: Please pray with me. God of humility, we pray a dangerous prayer – help us to be humble. Lord, be gentle with us in this prayer. We have an ideal of what it means to be humble – a way that makes us look and feel good about ourselves. But Lord, we know that there is so much more to humility than this. Do what you must to teach us this way of life so that we may offer it to others as we serve those around us. Amen.
Prayer for July 27: Please pray with me. God of truth, today we pray to lessen our desire to be right. Help us to see that humility is a better way to live and that being open to the idea that we might be wrong takes all of us much farther in life. At the same time, we’re being very careful in what we ask for Lord. Please don’t humble us – we don’t think we are prepared for what that might look like. Maybe a better way would be to tire us out when we are so stuck on being right. It’s exhausting being right and always trying to correct and save everyone Lord. Please make that exhaustion so big and tiring that we just give up on the whole notion of trying to be right all the time. Help us to have a listening ear and open arms – even with our enemies. We can’t change them, but we can forgive them, show them grace and mercy, and offer them love. What they do in response is out of our control. Give us the strength to be an example, to be your representative here, in this place – to be your hands, feet, and mouth. Amen.
Prayer for June 17: Please pray with me. God of humility, today we pray that you make us instruments of your humility. Help us to be open to receiving humility from you, so that we be a humble presence to those around us. Help us to swallow our pride so that we may serve our neighbors. Amen.
Prayer for May 3: Please pray with me. Forgiving God, today we pray that just as you are forgiving and have forgiven us, we might be able to forgive those around us who we believe have wronged us in some way. We ask for the humility to be the first to forgive and to be so radical as to forgive without prompting. Help us to turn away from blaming others as the root of our problems. Open our eyes to see what you are calling us to change in our own lives. And walk with us as we start this journey by forgiving ourselves because you have forgiven us first. Amen.
