Prayer for April 3: Please pray with me. Eternal Word, you send your life saving and life-giving word out to the nations. You have spoken through prophets, saints, ancient fathers and mothers, holy men and women, the written word, and more. In the Gospel of Matthew you tell us that what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart. Let the words that come out of our mouth bring you glory, offer words of forgiveness, peace, mercy, grace, and love. Let us speak truth with love and not use truth as a device to beat our opponents into submission. Let our thirst for being in control and being right be starved and die before it kills others’ humanity. Let our leaders speak words that lift up the people they represent. Let the words that they speak that create walls of separation and that demean people be silenced. And let us respond to such rotten fruit in a manner that builds up the kingdom of God and does not succumb to partaking in it. If we truly believe that your Word changes hearts, minds, and the world, then let us speak these words, believe them, and to trust that you your will is moving forward in spite of the apparent odds. Rotting fruit doesn’t last – only the fruit of your Word lasts. Amen.
Prayer for December 19: Please pray with me. Holy One, you lead us in ways we often don’t expect. Yet, your leadership is nothing like what our human leaders offer more often than not. We lift up our leaders. Give them wisdom. Give them courage. Many would pray that our leaders have the “right” beliefs and thoughts. What good is being right theologically or ideologically if it causes harm people? What good is it to be right and miss the humanity of those around us. The world is not all black and white. There is a great deal of grey because we are dealing with people and people are messy. Give leaders hearts and heads that look out for the greater good, that recognize the most vulnerable among us, that seek to bring people together and not push them apart. We especially pray for leaders that are narcissistic in their outlook. Help them to be change. We also lift up all the followers of these leaders. Help them to recognize their own blindness. Help all who oppose such leaders – to hold them accountable, but to still recognize the humanity of these leaders. We are all sinners and fall short. Amen.
Prayer for March 10. Please pray with me. God of wisdom, today we pray that you would grant all leaders wisdom – leaders of government, church, non-profits, education, business, service organizations, military, and all organizations. Give these leaders the wisdom to move us towards your kingdom. Grant us wisdom too, individually, that we may live your call for our lives to be peacemakers, to show love, to be merciful, and to love our neighbors and enemies. Amen.
Prayer for February 22: Please pray with me. God who brings order out of chaos, touch our land and our leaders in ways that calm the anxiety our world suffers from. Help leaders to know that peace comes through daily attention to peace. Give wisdom to our leaders so that they may implement policies that care for the least among us. Amen.
Prayer for November 8: Please pray with me. Sovereign God, we are a nation that is gripped by fear and anxiety – it is strangling us. We look to our leaders and to candidates to ease the stranglehold and only find them gripping tighter with their words and rhetoric. That is because we have decided to make them idols and gods – we wait anxiously to hear what they have to say. Will they bring us peace? Will they make us great? Will they solve our problems for us? When did we cede our responsibility to live out what you call us to be, Lord? Turn us from putting our salvation in human leaders and instead see them for who they are – fellow human beings who should be the chief servants, examples for us to follow in service to the rest of creation and humanity. Turn us from dividing people into us and them camps. Turn us to answer your call for our lives. Turn us to see that peace is not a destination, but rather the way of living. Turn us so that our trust is in you and that we respond to your call in faithfulness. The days ahead will not be easy Lord. Only you can give us the strength to go forward – to be Christians who are known for your love, grace, peace, and mercy. Shape us into your instruments for the days ahead. Let no one mistake us – may our lives be beacons that display who you are and how you are active in our world today. Turn us, shape us, move us. Amen.
Prayer for September 16: Please pray with me. God of the nations, today we ask for blessings for all nations. We pray that you would give wisdom and discernment for all leaders of nations. That they would work towards the promotion of peace, look out for the needs of those on the margins of society, and empower the people under their rule to live into their full potential. We also pray that we would be persistent in praying for our elected officials in our own countries, regardless of how we feel about them. Help us to see that when we pray for someone, we start to see them differently. Amen.
