Prayer for May 1: Please pray with me. God of light, today we ask that your light shine bright in our world. Evil exists among us – it has reared its head in our midst throughout history. It leaves its mark, death. It seeks to drain hope, to cause strife, to bring judgement, to spread wrath, and cause fear. It shows up in many places. And it can be overbearing to many. There are many who are living in this darkness Lord. Yet, the darkness cannot overcome the light – your light. When your light shines on darkness, the darkness is vanquished. It’s not a fight between dark and light – the darkness just can’t exist where there is light. Shine your light in the world. We know that you see to instill hope, to bring forgiveness, to offer mercy, to show love, and to calm the anxiety that exists. You show up in many ways and places and times. You come to us. You shine your light into our lives. And you invite us, and call us, and send us our to be your light in the world. Give us the courage to be light in the darkness around us. Amen.
Prayer for February 23: Please pray with me. God of light, shine down in the darkness. Let your light of love shine bright throughout creation. Make use lamps that shine out your light of love to those around us. So often we feel besieged by darkness that encroaches upon us, seemingly lurking and waiting to consume us. The darkness shows up in confusion, despair, anger, and fear. These are not your gospel messages. They are false gospels that proclaim ultimate defeat and death. Your Gospel is a message of hope, promise, grace, forgiveness, and love. Proclaim this message to us in ways that cause us to change. And in so doing, cause us to proclaim your message boldly to those around us. Amen.
Prayer for December 21: Please pray with me. God of Light, in the Northern Hemisphere we will experience darkness today – it is the shortest day of the year. Let your light shine in the darkness. Let your light of love, peace, joy, hope, forgiveness, and grace shine bright. Your light is needed Lord. When light shines, the darkness can not over come it. Let us be your instruments of light too Lord. Because you have shined your light into our lives, let us reflect that light to others. Let us be instruments of love, peace, joy, hope, forgiveness, and grace to those around us. And in so doing, let the light not only outshine the darkness, but change it. Amen.
Prayer for October 20: Please pray with me. God of welcome, you call to us to communicate your message of Good News to many around us. So many walk in the darkness of this world. Yet, your message is a light to the world. Open our eyes to see those around us that need to hear your message. Open our arms to welcome those who need to be accompanied. Open our ears to hear the stories of the lives we connect with. Open our hearts to welcome people – as they are, not to change them into us. Open our minds, and tear down our defenses that try to make others conform to us. Help us to know that every time someone new enters our community, the community changes. Amen.
Prayer for March 13: Please pray with me. God of labor, today we pray for all who labor and toil. We thank you for the ability to work. We thank you for the vocation you call us to. Bless our labors and remind us that we labor not just for money, but to fulfill our call in life – to live out the Gospel, to be a light to the world, to be an example of forgiveness in an unforgiving world, and to speak words of mercy, love, and peace to those who so desperately need to hear them. Amen.
Prayer for January 23: Please pray with me. God of light, shine in the darkness. Shine in the darkness of our very being – in those parts of us that are dark in sin, addiction, sorrow, pain, doubt, anger, and fear. Darkness can feel so consuming. Darkness can feel so alone. Some strike out at others – like a hand flailing around reaching for help while claiming they are fearless. But the reality is different. Turn us towards your light. Change us to be light in the world – to disperse the darkness with your Word and with love. Amen.
Prayer for January 18: Please pray with me. God of time, it’s the middle of the week. Today we offer a simple, yet complicated prayer. We give you thanks that we are alive at this time. Make us instruments of your will and your peace today. Let us carry your light to those who are in darkness. Because you bless us, help us to be a blessing to others. Amen.
