Prayer for October 18: Please pray with me. God of our future, today we lift up our futures. So often we see images of a not-so-bright future based on our present. It’s easy to get sucked into a cloud of darkness. There is a great deal of negativity and gloom around us. Yet, you offer an alternative – a message filled with hope, mercy, forgiveness, peace. You offer us something unthinkable – to walk with us in the dark places of our lives and to be a light that shines in the darkness. We walk on a path that leads to places that we have no idea about. And you walk right along side of us. Help us to be vulnerable, to build trust and to be trusting. Open our hearts to respond to your call for us. Amen.
Prayer for October 12: Please pray with me. God of grace, today we ask for an extra dose of grace. We need it Lord. There are so many of us humans who are extremely judgemental. How did we to be this way? There are so many humans who are quick to point out the flaws and errors of other humans. How did we get this way? More importantly, will it always be this way? Please help us Lord – remove the judgementalism and the eye for flaws and errors. These are a disease and virus on our souls. They are not life-giving, but crushing. Instead, give us hearts of grace, mercy, and peace. Yes, especially to those that are most judgmental. Please. Amen.
Prayer for September 25: Please pray with me. God who is completely unfair, we thank you for being unfair. Please don’t ever treat us fairly. For by treating us fairly, we would get what we deserve and that’s not going to be pretty for any of us. Instead, continue to treat us unfairly – giving us grace we don’t deserve, giving us forgiveness we certainly don’t deserve, giving us love unconditionally, and giving us mercy when the world demands you be merciless – even some of your so-called followers. Thank you for be unfair with us. Help us to be just as unfair with others, especially our enemies. Amen.
Prayer for September 11: Please pray with me. God of forgiveness, today we pray for all those in conflict. Sin is the breaking of relationship – a type of turning away from you and from others. We ask that you would radically reorient us towards you and others. Love is the drawing in towards one another – let your love grow within us. You have forgiven us and showed great grace and mercy to us. Help us to respond to this gift by also forgiving others with grace and mercy. We can’t control how others will respond, but that isn’t the point. You call on us to offer these things regardless of the response. Give us the courage to do just that. Amen.
Prayer for July 6: Please pray with me. God of relationships, today we ask that you would guide all relationships – especially between people. We are reminded in the Sermon on the Mount to act with grace and mercy towards others – not attacking and overpowering others. Open our eyes and ears to see and hear how we treat others. Amen.
Prayer for March 13: Please pray with me. God of labor, today we pray for all who labor and toil. We thank you for the ability to work. We thank you for the vocation you call us to. Bless our labors and remind us that we labor not just for money, but to fulfill our call in life – to live out the Gospel, to be a light to the world, to be an example of forgiveness in an unforgiving world, and to speak words of mercy, love, and peace to those who so desperately need to hear them. Amen.
Prayer for February 23: Please pray with me. God of mission, touch our hearts today with your Spirit. Make them burn with a desire to be radical – to radically love, forgive, show mercy, and walk the way of peace. Let us be fools for you in ways that touch hearts that need your touch. Amen.
Prayer for February 21: Please pray with me. God of grace, we learn that grace is not getting what we deserve, but rather, getting what we don’t deserve – your love, mercy, and forgiveness. Because you give us these things, turn us to go and love, to show mercy, and to offer forgiveness to all, even our enemies. Amen.
Prayer for January 10: Please pray with me. Patient God, today we pray for our enemies, our opponents, those who annoy the crap out of us, those that we don’t like or trust. We really don’t want to pray for them Lord. We’d rather call them names, fight them, dehumanize them, shame them and so much more. Yet, you call on us to pray for our enemies. This is not easy – in fact, it sucks. But then again, following you was never meant to be easy. We pray that all those opposed to us would have a change of heart. And more importantly Lord, we pray for ourselves – change our hearts towards our enemies and opponents. Silence us before we respond in anger. Hold us back before we respond with violence. Stop us before we type our of frustration. Close our mouths before we say something we will regret. There are frustrating people in the world Lord. Help us to see when we are frustrating someone else so that we might instead offer mercy, forgiveness, patience, and if need be, make us walk away to give space to others. Amen.
Prayer for January 3: Please pray with me. God who came to us as a child, hold us as your children. As we progress through the Christmas season, remind us that we are your children. Comfort us, love us, give us mercy. Strengthen us so that we may comfort, love and offer mercy to others. Amen.
