Prayer for June 26: Please pray with me. Holy God of all creation, today we pray for people of all faiths. Help us to see each other as children of God, not bitter enemies that need to be destroyed and killed. Help us to learn to listen to one another so we can live in peace. Help us to be peaceful and graceful to our neighbors of different faiths and no faith at all. Help us to live like you have taught us – to be peaceful to those around us regardless of their beliefs. Amen.
Prayer for April 3: Please Pray with me. God of our homes. Today we raise up our chores. They are tiring and never seem to end. We groan under the weight of these chores. But we also thank you that you have entrusted us with all of these things to make our lives better. Help us to take what we have been entrusted with and use it for your glory, to serve our neighbors, and to carry out our vocations. Amen.
Prayer for January 16: Please pray with me. God of justice, today we pray that your mercy and justice would flow through our land. Help us to hear the words that Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke – to judge each other by the contents of our character, not by the color of our skin. Help all of us to see the humanity of each person, to hold a hand out – to either help their neighbor, or to be helped by a neighbor. We are all in need of that help in some part of our life. Bless all who work to reconcile differences and disparities. Move us to to bend the arc of history toward reconciliation. Amen.
Prayer for November 16: Please pray with me. God of the cosmos, today we pray for your church. We are fond of claiming that the church is more than the building, yet how we latch and attach ourselves onto the importance of our buildings. Remind us that the church is called to not only care for those inside the church, but we are called to go out from the building, having been fed with your word and sacrament, so that we can serve our neighbors. Amen.
Prayer for October 17: God who is, today we come to you and humbly ask that you help us in a dire need. We are a distracted people – very distracted. We are distracted with a tidal wave of information, but very little wisdom. We distract ourselves with our technology, yet really don’t advance as human beings. We are distracted with constant noise, yet wonder why we never know what peace or rest is. We have made distraction an idol that we constantly seek out. Forgive us Lord. As much as we tell ourselves and others how important these distractions, we know that what is truly important is you, our relationship to you and those around us, and what you call us to be and do. Lift our heads away from the distractions to see you in our midst. Turn us to see our neighbors in need and act. Put away the distractions to be with those we claim to care about. Amen.
Prayer for July 19: Please pray with me. God of truth, today we pray that we would be changed. Help us to stop waiting for others to change, praying for others to change, trying to force others to change. Help us to let go of the desire to be right. Help us to stop asking “Who is my neighbor?” Transform us instead to take Jesus words and call to be a neighbor, especially to those we hate or are hated by, and make them a part of our very being. Amen.
Prayer for July 11: Please pray with me. God of truth, today we pray for wisdom. We need it Lord. So often we get so caught up in making sure we are right that it becomes an idol that we worship at the expense of those around us and across the world. We become egotistical enough to believe that we have the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth and that anyone who disagrees with our truth is wrong, or worse, evil. Yet, we are called to show mercy, to offer forgiveness, to live in love and to be a neighbor – even to the ones who we have been told are our enemies. Help us to turn from asking to reign death down on those enemies because they are wrong and we are right to showering them with love – love we first received from you. Love that we pass on to all. Love that is costly to us, but life giving to all. Amen.
