Prayer for October 4: Please pray with me. God of the universe, you have to be laughing. You have got to be laughing at humanity and our ridiculous attempts to control things here on earth. That works out so well so often doesn’t it? Lord help us, for our own sake. Strip us of our egos that make us think we know all the answers. Open our hearts to recognize that the game of politics and partisanship is something in which no one wins in the end. Instead, radically reorient us to a different way of living and being Lord. A way of life in which we care for our neighbors, regardless of who they are. A way of life in which we care for creation, so that it will be around for future generations. A way of life in which we empower people rather than enslave them or make them dependent on our political systems that seek to consolidate power for its own sake. Help us to see and know how ridiculous our power struggles are, and how dangerous and damaging they are to people. Amen.
Prayer for September 18: Please pray with me. God of all, today we pray for people who abuse their power over others. Manipulation, abuse, and exploitation are sins that still infect humanity. We place into your hands those who use these means to get what they want from others. Open their eyes to seeing how they hurt others. Open their hearts to repentence. We also pray for all who have been hurt by these people. Cradle them in your arms Lord and care for them. Show them that they do not walk alone. Help us to have the courage to stand up for those who have been hurt by manipulators, abusers, and exploiters so that others may not be hurt. Amen.
Prayer for March 15: Please pray with me. Long ago, it was written for a certain leader to beware the Ides of March. And death came. Why oh Lord, do we strive for power – to obtain it, to keep it from others, to use it to the detriment of others. Hoarding power leads to fights and ultimately death. Forgive us when we seek power and our own kingdom as opposed to seeking your kingdom. Amen.
Prayer for February 7: Please pray with me. God who is master of all, today we pray that we would recognize that we are your creation, we are not really in control, and that our job is not to control others or creation, but to be stewards. Take our desire for power and control and use it to change us into wanting to care for creation and others around us. Amen.
Prayer for November 23: Please pray with me. Reconciling God, today we pray a difficult prayer. We pray for our enemies. We don’t pray for their defeat and destruction. Rather we pray that there would be a change of heart – for both them and us. Help them and us to see the humanity of each other. Help them and us to see that violence and anger and division lead to death. You have a different way Lord, a difficult way. Make both them and us unsatisfied in our judgements of each other. Turn us from seeking out what is the worst for one another. Help us to see that our most serious enemy is not anyone out there, no them at all, but rather, the enemy within that wants to claim control over our lives. Help us to see that our real enemy is the sin, the broken relationship with God and with others, the smug attitudes we cling to, the desire to be right no matter the cost, the excessive pride, the destructive envy, the lust for power and attention. Teach us to follow your example – to love our enemies in a most vulnerable way. Amen.
Prayer for October 14: Please pray with me. Empowering God, today we come to you in humility. Help us to see that the purpose of power is not to grab it, hoard it, and keep others away with it. Rather, cleanse us of the addition to power over people, institutions, animals, and the rest of creation. You made us for so much more than that. Help those of us who have some level of power to use it as you call us to – to empower those around us and in so doing that we may all recognize that we are all children of God. Amen.
Prayer for October 6: Please pray with me. Expansive God who knows no end, today we pray for our politics. Yes Lord, this is a big prayer. We hand over all of our politics over to you Lord. We’ve screwed it up pretty good with our own ambitions, addiction to power, division, lust for being right, and worse. Only you can fix this. But instead of just fixing it, please replace it with your kingdom. Amen.
