Prayer for November 3: Please pray with me. God of relationships, today we pray for all who experience brokenness. At some point in our lives, we all experience this Lord. At some point we are all broken. It’s just a matter of how broken we are and how broken our relationships are. Healing God, we pray that you would heal our brokenness – mend us and our relationships. And where the brokenness is too painful – walk with us so we will not be alone. If need be, pull us away from the brokenness. But if possible, reconcile people to one another. Amen.
Prayer for November 2: Please pray with me. God of sinners, today we pray that you would radically reorient us away from the broken relationship of sin. Oh how we love to scapegoat and lay blame on others. Oh how it makes us feel clean. Yet, we are not Holy God. Clear the dirt from our eyes to see that laying blame on others doesn’t make us clean, but it just spreads the dirt around. We want to lay blame when something bad happens. We want someone to pay the price. We want an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. We want to make it appear like we are righteous and innocent. But what would happen if we looked at our selves? What would we see? What if we looked at our culture? What would we see? Would we like it? Help us to stop enabling our culture to promote violence against others. Help us to stop enabling ourselves to prop up a culture that makes excuses for violence and makes scapegoats – both foreign and domestic. Amen.
Prayer for October 23: Please pray with me. God of creation, today we lift up all who feel as though they are living a lie. So many people feel stuck and afraid. Many feel alone and lost. Many have been told that they are condemned because of who they are. So many people have been thrown out and are outcasts because of who they are or what they have done. They are filled with regret. Yet, this is not what life is about. You offer the outcast Good News – that the outcast is also a child of God. The each person is deeply loved by you God. Yes, outcasts are sinners, just like every one of us. Yes, outcasts are broken and have broken relationships – just like we all do. But that is not the end of the story. It’s just a fact of life. Because of being sinners and because of being broken, we know how much we need you God. We can’t do this alone. We can’t even begin to start. Send your Spirit to empower those who feel drained. Send your Spirit to wipe clean those who feel that they are dirtied by living a lie. Send your Spirit to bring dignity and humanity to those who feel less than human. Send your Spirit, Lord. And in so doing, send us also to be with the outcast and the broken. Amen.
Prayer for September 11: Please pray with me. God of forgiveness, today we pray for all those in conflict. Sin is the breaking of relationship – a type of turning away from you and from others. We ask that you would radically reorient us towards you and others. Love is the drawing in towards one another – let your love grow within us. You have forgiven us and showed great grace and mercy to us. Help us to respond to this gift by also forgiving others with grace and mercy. We can’t control how others will respond, but that isn’t the point. You call on us to offer these things regardless of the response. Give us the courage to do just that. Amen.
Prayer for August 28: Please pray with me. God who is, who was, and who will be – today we pray that you would give us the courage to answer your call. When Jesus asked “Who do you say that I am?” the disciples were scared to answer. We understand their fear Lord. If the answer is an acknowledgement of God, then we can’t just smile and nod and ignore your words and continue living how we want. Instead, we are called to imitate, to follow, to live differently. We are called to communicate differently. We are called to live out our relationships differently. We are called to live out our vocations differently. We are called to use our financial resources differently. We are called to recognize that everything we have is yours and that you have made us stewards. You call us to use these resources and our very lives to participate in the unfolding of the reign of God. No wonder it’s scary to declare that you are God. Give us the courage to live into the faith you give us. Amen.
Prayer for August 25: Please pray with me. God of community, today we pray that you would lay a foundation of trust in our relationships. Trust takes a great deal of work and when it is destroyed, it takes so much time and energy to restore. Without trust, we become selfish, only looking out for ourselves. That makes us small. Holy God, expand us in ways that surprise us. You instill faith in us and call on us to respond with trust to your call. Give us the courage to answer that call – to take a leap of faith and to trust you. You never fail us. Amen.
Prayer for March 2. Please pray with me. God of repentance, today we ask that you turn us from our sinful ways. Sin is much deeper than the acts that we do, it is the broken relationships that persist. Our relationship with you, with others, with ourselves, and with the rest of creation are broken. Heal the brokenness, we can’t. Amen.
