Prayer for February 9: Please pray with me. God of slumber, give rest to all who need it – to those who labor at night, who work long hours, who do what they can to provide for their families. Give rest to those who are fighting sickness. Give rest to those who face death. So many people are tired Lord. They are worn out and exhausted. They are literally killing themselves through their labor. Give them rest. Even you rested after your work of creation, why do we think we are better than you? Give us the rest we need. Amen.
Prayer for September 5: Please pray with me. God of Sabbath, today we pray for all those who cannot or will not rest. There is much to do in our culture Lord. So often we make our work into an idol – yes an idol to be worshiped. What else can we call it when we devote so much time, energy, and attention to it. Yes, it is important, but… God, we ask that we would learn how to rest – really rest. To disconnect, to put the phone down, to leave notifications behind for a time. To realize that all of these things – the technology and devices – they all exist to serve us, yet so often the reverse seems to be the case. Open our eyes and hearts to hear your notification – that you call on us to rest so that we can live out our vocation refreshed and ready. And to do it in such a way that we aren’t consumed by it, but rather invigorated and ready. Amen.
Prayer for June 7: Please pray with me. God of rest, today we pray for all who seek your rest. We can’t keep going without rest Lord. Yet rest is so counter-cultural. Our society is grounded on working ourselves to death. Yet, you call us to something different – rest. Help us to answer this call for our lives and help others to rest as well. Amen.
Prayer for February 15: Please pray with me. God who labors, today we are reminded that you are a God who creates and works in that creation. We are your creation. You have called us to be stewards of that creation, including ourselves. You are also a God of rest who calls us to rest. Help us to be good stewards and laborers. Give us the courage to rest also at appropriate times. Amen
Prayer for December 19: Please pray with me. God of rest, today we pray that you would give us a moment of rest – whatever length of time that is – in the midst of the hustle and bustle of life. As we approach Christmas, there is so much to do and so little time to do it in. Help us to let go of the idea of perfection – the idea that the perfect Christmas will look right and sound right and contain the perfect gifts, as if Christmas were some kind of picture from a hallmark card. Instead, help us to know that the perfect Christmas is one spent with loved ones thankful for each other and for you Lord. Help us to see that everything else is just glitter – it adds to the celebration, but is not essential. Amen.
Prayer for November 9: Please pray with me. God of rest, today we pray that we would be given rest from the heated and fearful rhetoric of the last two years that we have come to know as a presidential campaign. This is not normal Lord and we know it, yet we are unsure of what to do about it. We are worn down, our society is anxious, our world uncertain. There is much to do. Yet for today, give us rest so that we will be ready to share your peace, joy, mercy, and love with those we come in contact with daily. Amen.
Prayer for August 4: Please pray with me. God of Sabbath, today we ask for rest. We are tired Lord. We are tired of running here and there. We are tired of working long and hard. We are tired of being constantly connected and in the know about everything. We are tired of hearing about every single tragedy that occurs in the world. We are tired of weeping. We are tired of crying out to you. We are tired. Give us rest Lord. Renew us and rejuvenate us with your holy food. Refresh us with your holy word. Touch us and heal us so that we can go back into the world and touch and offer prayers of healing to those around us. Amen.
